Within the framework of the European program ACAδIMIA – «ACADIMIA-European Teachers’ Academy for Creative and Inclusive Learning» – the creative methodology Gamification for fun was implemented to the students of the 1 st High School of Gerakas on the 9 th of May 2025.
The game “De Bono’s Hats. The Life of a Computer. Hats in Action” was presented to them within the ICT course. The learning objectives that were set from the beginning were:
1. Understanding basic IT terms (input, output, data storage and processing
units, cloud).
2. Developing critical thinking
3. Improving collaboration, active listening, discussion management and argumentation.
After explaining the rules of the game to them, the students were divided into groups and completed the game in 2 teaching hours.
Hats:
White Hat → Data & facts
Red Hat → Emotions & intuition
Black Hat → Criticism & risks
Yellow Hat → Positives & advantages
Green Hat → Creative solutions
Blue Hat → Organization of discussion
In each round one group wears the Blue hat and it coordinates the discussion. All other groups wear the same hat and think based on it. In each new round, the team wearing the Blue hat changes and all others change to the same hat (e.g., everyone wears the Yellow Hat in the second round). Each team scores the other teams (except its own) based on the clarity of their arguments, creativity and originality, and persuasiveness. The winning team received the Computer Expert Badge.
The students used the “Six Hats” as different glasses to view information from many perspectives. Thus, they transformed the abstract concept of critical thinking and argumentation into an interactive and understandable journey. They felt that they learned while playing and having fun. The expressed surprise when the time ended, and they also did not complain at all about not having a break.
