Webinar on “Gamification for Fun” by the Directorate of Secondary Education of East Attica, Greece

The Directorate of Secondary Education of East Attica, within the framework of the Network “SYN: I Function – I Act – I Create,” successfully organized an online training webinar on the methodology “Gamification for Fun,” of the European program «ACADIMIA – European Teachers’ Academy for Creative and Inclusive Learning».

The webinar was attended by 100 teachers from 40 different schools with various specialities who were introduced to the principles of gamification, a creative methodology that enriches the learning process by integrating game-like elements such as points, challenges, progression, and reward systems. As highlighted during the training, gamification enhances student engagement and interaction, while keeping learning objectives at the heart of the educational experience.

Participants were guided through all stages of the methodology: defining learning objectives, designing a storyline, setting challenges, determining rules and strategy, and integrating rewards. A complete gamified activity was also presented: “De Bono’s Hats: The Life of the Computer – Hats in Action!” developed for the Informatics curriculum in High School.

The event featured a video-interview with Professor Tryggvi Thayer  of the University of Iceland, co-creator of the methodology, who offered valuable insights on key considerations for educators, common challenges and how to address them, as well as the positive impact of gamification on students’ motivation and learning outcomes.

Following the presentations, teachers of the same subject participated in breakout discussions to exchange ideas and design concepts for potential gamified activities. These ideas were later shared in the plenary session, showcasing the creativity and collaborative spirit of the participants.

The Directorate of Secondary Education of East Attica and the Network “SYN: I Function – I Act – I Create” remain committed to promoting innovative pedagogical approaches and supporting educators through meaningful professional development opportunities.
