Exploring Social Justice and Climate Justice through Drama in Education (DiE)

Overview

This intensive one-week Drama in Education (DiE) course introduces participants to drama pedagogy as a powerful experiential learning methodology that addresses the cognitive, emotional and social dimensions of learning.

The course places particular emphasis on social justice and climate justice, exploring how drama-based approaches can help learners understand complex societal challenges, develop empathy, critical thinking and agency, and imagine alternative futures.

Participants will explore how Drama in Education can be used across the curriculum to address themes such as inequality, discrimination, migration, environmental sustainability, climate change, responsibility, participation and democratic values. Through practical workshops, reflection and collaborative planning, the course demonstrates how drama creates safe spaces for dialogue, critical inquiry and embodied learning.

The summer school follows an experiential learning structure combining drama workshops, group work, reflection, cultural activities and collaborative lesson planning, closely aligned with the ACAδIMIA approach to creative and inclusive learning.

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Understand the core principles of Drama in Education as a pedagogical methodology
  • Explore drama conventions and techniques suitable for primary and secondary education
  • Gain practical tools for teaching social justice and climate justice topics through drama
  • Learn how to adapt global and abstract issues to age-appropriate classroom contexts
  • Develop inclusive, participatory and learner-centred teaching strategies
